Scholarship Support Provided by the D-9 Foundation

As our Mission Statement states "…Every graduating senior or GED recipient, who desires to continue education, may receive scholarship support upon approved application. …"

The Foundation hosts a benefit auction and golf tournament (weekend after Labor Day) and thanks to the generosity of local individuals and businesses, more than $63,000 was raised (net total) at the 2005 event. A scholarship dessert, hosted by the Community Scholarship Fund, is held after Thanksgiving, and provides significant support to the Foundation’s efforts. In addition, area residents contribute to the Foundation, often as a memorial or "pass through" fund.

Scholarship funds are invested in Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) in order to ensure continuity and fiscal responsibility.

Scholarship Selection and Distribution

Students apply for scholarships with the Eagle Center at EPHS (Summary of all Scholarships). Scholarship recipients are chosen by a committee of EPHS staff members (separate from the D-9 Scholarship Committee) who know the applicants well and are best able to match recipients with the criteria developed by the D-9 Foundation.

After recipients are selected, the D-9 Foundation deposits scholarship money with the School District 9 Business Office after July 1. A contract is then signed with the recipient and a parent, and proof of enrollment is sent to School District 9. The district then distributes the money to the business office of the recipient’s college. Funds are held against charges for enrollment, tuition or books by the college business office and are administered on a quarterly basis.

If a recipient is no longer enrolled in school as a full time student or does not maintain academic standing, the funds revert to the business office of School District 9 and then are returned to the D-9 Foundation.

Since 2002, the Scholarship Committee has coordinated the creation of the annual Scholars Poster.

Each year, all District 9 scholarship recipients (from the D-9 Foundation and other sources) are invited to gather for a photograph at a local community location such as the Wood House. The photo is featured on an 18" x 24" color poster which is distributed free of charge to about 500 students, schools and to businesses who support the Foundation’s efforts.

The poster continues to be a positive way to build community awareness of scholarship programs and higher education. It also provides community recognition of high achievers in each Senior Class, and hopefully, showcases them as role models to younger students.
